MATLOCK

Matlock is an upper echelon lyricist, gifted songwriter and underground hip-hop luminary. Best known for his songs "Moonshine", "Brand New Nikes" and "Bright Sunny Day" he has spent more than twenty years making timeless material for his devoted fan base which has grown from the Chicago indy rap scene of the late 90s, into what is now a worldwide cult following. His larger than life persona and independent hustle has gained him his legendary status, the respect of his peers and millions of plays without a major record label.

Praised for his incredible versatility, Matlock is at times a full-blown comedic entertainer spewing some of the most gut-laugh inducing punchlines in the business, and at others he wears the hats of a thought-provoking philosopher, motivational speaker and streetwise storyteller and does all with great skill. You hear a master wordsmith at play as you listen to him weave together double meanings, obscure references, forgotten expressions and little pearls of wisdom in a way that is exceptionally poetic, yet easily digestible.

While his slang-slathered, multisyllabic, braggadocio/battle rhymes are on par with rap's elite, Matlock may be at his very best when he speaks from his heart. On his more serious songs such as "God vs. Money" and "Matlock Blues" you can hear an emotional honesty that you don't get from many other artists in his arena. His talent for pulling you into his world and invoking feeling from the listener is second to none. He feels what he says and he makes us all feel it too.

Matlock is the founder of the Family Jewels crew, CEO of his record label Fly Pig, and makes up half of the super-duo The Cult Leaders with rapper/producer DreamTek. He's also been the promoter behind many incredible hip-hop shows including The Great Chicago Fire, a historic event which sold out the landmark venue Subterranean and gained the windy city scene national attention.
