“Music is sound manipulated by spirit, that’s all it is. Go out and hike, and the music is there for you to listen to.”
– Kit Ebersbach, engineer
In March 2020, facing the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic from the safety of our homes, we announced Aloha ʻĀina, a multi-part series of field recordings captured in Hawai‘i.
During a time when so many of us wanted to be outdoors — hiking through forests, breathing fresh air, striding along ocean shores — we recognized a unique opportunity to share the sounds of our archipelago with the world.
Uncrowded beaches with booming surf… The white noise of a downpour upon a forest canopy… Trails populated not by people but by ‘apapane and ‘i‘iwi and the wind through ʻōhiʻa…
These original recordings transport listeners to rare locales and lush landscapes found only in Hawai‘i. Captured on location in recent years by engineer and Honolulu music scene veteran, Kit Ebersbach, the twelve-part series (available digitally on Bandcamp) takes us throughout the Hawaiian islands — including O‘ahu, Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i Island, Moloka‘i, and Maui — offering descriptions and place names with each track.
This project is a stark departure from our label’s usual offering of jazz, soul, funk, electronic and psych. Our goal with every Aloha Got Soul release, however, is to present quality recordings from Hawai‘i for all listeners to enjoy. We believe Aloha ‘Āina achieves that. With Volume 1, the global music community immediately took notice: journalists and tastemakers from New York to London were singing the project’s praises, and even DJs in Kyoto and Los Angeles were adding it to their stay-at-home mixes.
"This album couldn't have come at a more perfect time…Secret Waterfall take me awayyyyyyyyy"
– Mamabear, dublab.com
“Meditative and organic, designed to flood the imaginations of vacationers with the gentle hum of paradise.”
– Anton Spice, Bandcamp Daily
We’re crowdfunding on Qrates to give you a chance to own this project on vinyl.
If we reach our goal, this project will come to life as a double LP pressed to black vinyl (for optimal audio quality), with black inner sleeves and full color labels, housed in a reverse-board gatefold jacket.
In other words, this is your chance to own these sounds on wax.
