Welcome to Cumberland Falls...

When I traveled to Kentucky in 2016 and after spending the past couple of years living in New Zealand, moving back to the states felt like a surreal dream. I spent many nights overseas writing and romancing an overtly patriotic portrait of the American experience. Not its politics or even the familiar Southern California suburbs I grew up in, but the effervescence of the Americana midlands I had only read about and knew a few friends from.

When I visited Cumberland Falls, there was a sign to Dog Slaughter Falls. While not being the most friendly name for a hiking trail, its unsettling name made me think of conspiracy theories and potentially undiscovered mysteries that laid dormant in the area. There had to have been the southern equivalent to The Jersey Devil within those woods, or at the very least, something kind of fucked up. After we left, we got to visit a graveyard where the local kids would hang out. Whether it was the ghosts of civil war reenactors or the laughs we had sitting in the car, I wanted to create something from all of it.

We recorded Cumberland Falls in Los Angeles during the summer of 2018. The entirety of the record was recorded in about 3-4 days and in addition to a classic LA heatwave, we were hyped to make it happen. This album feels like closing a chapter on a big part of my life, so I'm elated to share it with you. Thank you for considering to participate in manufacturing Cumberland Falls on vinyl record and directly supporting my band.

Cumberland Falls touches upon themes of paranoia, isolation, cabin fever, and anxiety amongst '90s-inspired jangly guitars and infectious melodies. Previous Art Is Hard Records releases Honey, Milk and Blood and The Pink Noise were covered and highly reviewed by significant media publications such as The Guardian, NME, Noisey, Spin, Stereogum, BrooklynVegan, and others alike.

Shunkan is a ‘90s-inspired indie rock band formed by Los Angeles native and moody half-Japanese frontwoman Marina Sakimoto. Her music has been compared to the sounds of Liz Phair, Waxahatchee, and Hop Along. Sakimoto grew up in a mixed household of American and Japanese cultures in Southern California. Her heritage, affinity to both cultures, and sense of misplacement led her to work with feelings of isolation and introspection.

Shunkan's first EP Honey, Milk and Blood and debut album The Pink Noise were covered and highly reviewed by significant media publications such as The Guardian, NME, Noisey, Spin, Stereogum, BrooklynVegan, and others alike. In 2019, she has released singles “Little Hell”, “Mornings In The Afterlife”, and “Bloody Winter”. Her sophomore album Cumberland Falls released September 13th, 2019.
