If you know anything about hip-hop, you're probably already aware of who Common is. After debuting with his single "Take It EZ" in 1992, the Academy Award-winning rapper/actor Common has established himself as an important voice in hip-hop. For more than two decades, Common has blessed the world with his music of love, self-awareness and upliftment, characterized by his thought-provoking, poetic lyricism and sample-based soulful production. Some of his most important work have been produced by the Soulquarians, the hip-hop/neo-soul supergroup featuring the world-renowned beat maestro, J Dilla. Wax Poetics Japan has curated a 2xLP colored vinyl compilation featuring 12 timeless tracks from Common’s three albums (2000’s Like Water for Chocolate, 2002’s Electric Circus, and 2005’s Be) that J Dilla worked his magic on.

For the 12 tracks, check out the tracklisting below. All of these songs are certified classics loved by hip-hop fans worldwide. Instead of the usual black vinyl, we have decided to go with marble colored vinyl, to symbolize the mix of the duo’s singular talents. If you love Common and/or Dilla’s music, this is one compilation you do not want to miss.

All plans include A3 (H420×W297mm) sized posters of Common and J Dilla as well as two types of Wax Poetics stickers.

Profile

Common

Born in 1972 in Chicago, Common is an American hip-hop recording artist. Debuting in 1992 with the album Can I Borrow a Dollar?, Common maintained a significant underground following into the late 1990s, after which he gained notable mainstream success through his work with the Soulquarians. He has released 10 studio albums to date, with his 4th album Like Water for Chocolate, his first major-label album, widely regarded as a hip-hop classic. Besides receiving multiple Awards as a musician, Common has also established himself as a successful actor, starring in numerous movies including Selma, which also featured his song “Glory,” winner of 2015 Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, as well as the 2015 Academy Award for Best Original Song.

J Dilla

Born in 1974 in Detroit, J Dilla (also known as Jay Dee) was an American record producer and rapper who emerged from the mid-1990s underground hip-hop scene in Detroit, Michigan. Besides his work as a member of the hip-hop group Slum Village, his production for The Pharcyde, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and Busta Rhymes garnered him worldwide acclaim as a talented producer. In the late 90s he joined the Soulquarians, a musician collective responsible for spawning classics by D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, Common and The Roots. Until his untimely death in 2006 from a rare blood disease, J Dilla had a prolific career with 15 solo albums and EPs to his name (including posthumous releases).

This project is presented by Wax Poetics Japan in collaboration with Universal Music Japan.
The songs are properly licensed, and portions of proceeds will go to the artists involved in the recordings, including J Dilla.
