Roger Daltrey of The Who recently said something to the effect that rock is dead, rap is the future. I've thought that since about 1990, many others have, too, at least in the sense of rock being the most innovative format around. That doesn't mean you can't use the fog of nostaglia to be a subtle smoke screen for lyrics that are a slight departure from the stereotypical rock canon. This record has a few songs that mention the Devil, another one about Typhon, the mythical Greek monster, a Sanskrit refrain from the Bhagavad Gita, and a bunch of vague, impressionistic images from my psyche. All with a backdrop of jangly cliches and classic rock tropes. Not to suggest it's done ironically - I love the vocabulary of rock and its range from melancholy to machismo, and it's a great excuse to play self-indulgent guitar parts and Phil Collins-style drum fills that hopefully obfuscate my vocals and lyrical exercises. As a self-concious introvert, that's fine by me, though I want to be careful to not make my work inscrutable. So for those of you who want to support my endeavors, I feel I owe it to share the true story - behind the music.
